How to Build a USB WiFi Antenna

Example of a USB Wifi Antenna
Example of a USB Wifi Antenna

If you're tired of poor or intermittent wireless signals and can only detect one or two networks. and you want to connect to the cafe down the street, with very few skills and a couple of simple tools, you can build a powerful USB WiFi antenna that will boost your WiFi detection range tenfold or more.

  1. Step 1

Purchase a USB WiFi adapter from your local computer hardware store (The price should be around $40). Install it on your computer by following the on-screen set-up instructions.

  2. Step 2

Find or buy an old metal object that is rounded such as a can or bowl, and cut a hole in it that allows the USB adapter to fit snugly within it.

  3. Step 3

Push the USB adapter halfway through the hole so it won't slide out. Connect the USB extension cable from the computer to your adapter.

  4. Step 4

Hang the "antenna" so that the adapter and antenna are facing out the window (towards wherever more signals are likely to be found).

  5. Step 5

Search for and connect to wireless networks by right-clicking on the wireless icon in the taskbar and selecting "View Available Wireless Networks."

How to Extend yout USB using UTP

introHow to Extend yout USB using UTP
This is my second Instructables. This time, I'm gonna tell everyone how to extend your USB using UTP. Why do you need to do so? Because the USB extender in shops only around 1,5 meters. It's very short, if you need 50 meters for a USB WiFi antenna on your roof. So I share to you people this technique.

P.S.: I will be making the Instructables of the Indonesia's style of USB WiFi antenna. The picture is below.

step 1Gather your parts

You need:
(1)USB Cable
(2)UTP Cable
(3)Small PVC Pipe
(4)Rubber tape
(5)thermofit / heatshrink

step 2The making of Part 1

Open the UTP and USB cable. Put the small PVC pipe in the UTP cable. Put the thermofit in the USB cable. Then connect it like this:

white orange & orange to red,
white & green to white,
green to green,
and the rest to black.

Remeber to solder it.

step 3The making of Part 2

Fit the pipe in the connections and close it with rubber tape. You're finished! Try it. If USB is not detected, then change the USB 1.1 to USB 2.0.

If it doesn't work, try the circuit below.

How to Make Indonesia's WajanBolic or PanciBolic (USB)

step 1Gather the parts!
What you need:

1. Extended USB cable
2. Wok or the cover of a saucepan. (I use the cover of saucepan, because it's lighter).
3. USB WiFi
4. 3" PVC pipe. You need at least 1m. (depending of your wok size)
5. 1.25" PVC pipe. You need just a little of it, at least 5" long. Cut the middle (like in the picture)
6. Doff for 3" pipe (doff=pipe cover, holed in the middle. One of them connect to 1.25" doff using screw)
7. Doff for 1.25" pipe (stick aluminium foil inside then hole in midle, the other don't need to be holed)
8. Aluminium foil
9. Drill

If you don't understand, see picture

step 2Suck the WiFi USB!

Suck it up on the 1.25" PVC pipe! (picture)

step 3The hardest part...

Get the 3" PVC. Count the focal point. Make a mark in the focal point. Then put aluminum foil EXCEPT for the focal point. Then make a hole around 5.3cm from the edge for the USB wifi. Insert than USB Wifi in.

step 4Almost done!

Close the 3" PVC pipe (the one with the 1.25" doff).

step 5Drilling!

Drill the wok and screw it with the another 3" doff.

step 6Secure it together!

Secure it (picture)
